Luton Chess Club's Thomas P O'Brien entered the Major Section of the London Chess League FIDE Weekender during April 2026, held London Mindsports Centre.
On the first day, Tommy opened the books with a draw against Sohana Sengupta (1722) in round 1. The next day he scored a win in round 2 against Vivaan Chhabra (1606) and draw in round 3 against Brendan O'Gorman (1750). On the final day, Tommy scored another win in his 4th round game against Domenico Amabile (1704). In the 5th and final round, Tommy shared joint 2nd place with six other players on 3 points each. Leading was Julian D Llewellyn (1809) on 4 points, needing only a draw to win first place outright. Only problem was, his opponent was our very own Tommy O'Brien. This is the game that ensused.
This impressive win against the leader, secured Tommy joint first place in the Major Section.
With his back to back 1st places at the London Chess League FIDE weekender, and at the St Albans Chess Congress, along with Jonadab Oki winning 1st place at Northampton Chess Congress, Luton Chess Club is back to winning ways.
