This was the battle between of perhaps two of the most chess literate players in the Bedfordshire Chess League. Tommy O'Brien of Luton Chess Club and Andrew Bowler of Milton Keynes are very well read and always booked up on theory. Also, Tommy is the current club champion and Andrew is the current county champion, so this was anticipated to be a fascinating encounter. The game presented below is fully annotated by Tommy O'Brien.
Andrew Bowler v Thomas P O'Brien, BCL 05.05.2026
Luton A team also won on boards 2 and 3, and with draws on boards 4 and 5, ended the season with a win. And the third time within a week, a Luton Chess Club player has beaten a opponent rated over 2100 over the board at classical time controls. Hopefully a prodigious omen for the next season. It's going to be interesting to find out.
