The 2024-25 Luton Chess Club Championship is a four round Swiss System tournament. The games are ECF rated are played at the longer classical league time controls of All Moves in 1 hour and 20 minutes plus 10 second increments each move. Fourteen club players have entered the tournament and round 1 was completed this week.
The table below show the results but not the drama over the board. Unsurprisingly, the Luton A-team players, Aleks, Julian, Michael, Samir, & Tommy won their matches.
My game against new junior player Qasim was too close to call until the end, when I was objectively losing, but swindled a win, due to experience more than outright skill.
Des came very close to causing the upset of the season in his game against Julian last night after he managed to get both Rooks on the 7th rank, with his Queen ready to pounce and missed a difficult to see mate in 6.
The star performance of round 1 must go to the other junior in the tournament, Elliot Young who played a pawn sacrifice followed by a spectacular Rook sacrifice and a mate in 25!
